THE FUTURE OF MARKETING – SPJ ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT WITH ASHOK PATRO

“Gone are the days when all of us had to sit through the commercials on TV. Today, the challenge for advertisers is to be present and helpful across the various digital touchpoints for the consumer. They must think omnichannel as consumers switch between apps and prefer online to in-store.

Advertisers need to have the correct measurement strategy in place to understand what is working. All these, while also thinking about what is the best for the consumer.”

From a Team Player to a Global Leader - Rajat Mathur’s (GMBA 2020) Success Story

Rajat Chandra Mathur, SP Jain’s GMBA alumnus, has always believed in the process of transition. Awarded the President’s Award for Global Excellence, he was part of the Dean’s List for all three trimesters and was also the President of the Placement Committee at SP Jain. His exceptional capabilities landed him an on-campus recruitment in PwC India.

Describing his professional journey from a team player to a leader, he shared some insights of how SP Jain's GMBA program helped to shape his career and impact his future goals. Let's learn more about his journey.

  • Tell us a bit about yourself. What are some significant moments from your life that shaped you?

Currently, I work as a Senior Associate at PwC India, as part of the Advisory line of service in the GovTech space. I am proud to be part of prestigious projects serving the nation and solving important problems. In my opinion, I have always kept calm in pressure situations breaking the problem into smaller tasks. Having faith in oneself and trusting your team has helped me in playing the role of a team player and a future leader.

  • How did you find out about SP Jain’s GMBA? Why did you decide to enrol in it?

With over 3 years of work experience, I was looking for a premier institute that will provide me with global exposure, an opportunity to learn not only from the faculty but also from peers and enable me to enter the next phase of my career. A couple of my friends had already pursued their postgraduate studies at SP Jain, and they were the ones who introduced me to the GMBA program – the curriculum and program structure aligned perfectly with my expectations.

  • You spent your time at SP Jain with people from around the world. How did this impact you?

Having a diverse cohort enables you to understand people from different parts of the globe, their thought processes, cultures, and work environments. I believe SP Jain has a unique balance with its tri-city program for its students to imbibe the business culture of that region as well as to interact with people from different sections of the world. This helps in improving communication, exercising empathy towards others and a sense of acceptance of different perceptions.

  • How does life after SP Jain look like for you? What changes have you seen in yourself since graduation?

Life after SP Jain has helped me become confident as a person, enhanced my people skills and allowed me to work effectively towards life holistically. I was nervous during the initial phase of my MBA journey, but taking one step at a time helped me live in the present and face every challenge head-on. Currently working in the GovTech space makes me feel proud and happy to contribute to building this great nation.

  • SP Jain prepares students to become global leaders. How do you think the GMBA program at SP Jain opened a gateway for you?

I have always believed in the process of transition. To become a leader, it is very important to be a team player. SP Jain provided me with an opportunity to work with wonderful people in my cohort and being around such talented minds helped me shape my personality. The faculties who addressed us ensured we emerge as responsible individuals and not as mere students graduating with an MBA degree. The Global Learning activities, Industry Interface Projects, Student Board Room assignments and the various committees formed provide a platform for the students to work together and emerge as leaders. This allowed my cohort and me to expand our horizons and emerge as global leaders of the future.

What advice would you want to give students who want to take up a similar career path as yours? How can they make the best of their SP Jain journey so they are equipped for this career?

There are no shortcuts to success. Students should strive for excellence, participate in all activities, should have the ability to listen, enhance their skills and empathise with each other. Being positive is the most important factor in one’s overall development. If the student can keep a positive mind-set and come up with solutions, they will grow as individuals and succeed in their plans.
