How a Scientist Boosted his Career with an Executive MBA -  Dr Thomas OH’s Story

Dr Thomas OH took a rather unusual journey in his studies and career. After spending 15 years from the conferring of his doctoral degree in immunology to post-doctoral virology research in Australia, Thomas left academia in 2017 and took up the role as a Medical Affair professional for a German-based healthcare company here in Singapore.

As someone with a strong scientific background, what led Dr. Thomas to take up a global education in business? How does he benefit from the SP Jain Executive MBA? Let’s find out.

Q. How has the SP Jain EMBA experience been for you so far?

Invigorating! The EMBA experience has been great and exactly what I had expected from a postgraduate business degree.

Q. You are a Scientist by profession and hence, are a ‘non-traditional’ candidate for an MBA. Why did you decide to pursue this degree?

I am challenging the paradigm, aren’t I? I see no reason why a science background would stop someone from pursuing an EMBA. This hunger for additional commercial skills is pushing me forward. I am specialised in Medical & Scientific Affairs, a role that bridges the gap between industry and healthcare. However, my commercial skills and understanding are things that I lack as I venture deeper into the role where business acumen becomes increasingly essential. For me, an MBA is a perfect degree to complement my scientific expertise, helping me become the complete package.

Q. How was your admission experience at SP Jain like? How do you think your profile stood out from the rest?

The Admission process was well-coordinated, and it was a smooth sail, given the support from various teams. I think my profile stood out because I have a doctorate in science which is not a common sight for an EMBA program - I would like to believe that this made me stand out as an interesting classmate.

Q. How is SP Jain helping you excel in your MBA despite being from a non-traditional background?

The important resources at SP Jain for me would be the faculty and my peers. Good faculty can absolutely make a big difference in knowledge transfer and its application in the real world. The quality of my cohort has also supported me in this journey.

Q. You are currently studying in a classroom with professionals from different industries and career levels. How is this diversity helping your learning experience?

The diversity seen in my classroom helps to make learning very interesting. It opens my eyes to other industries I have no previous exposure to, and their views and comments are valuable to class learning.

Q. What do you plan to do after graduation? How is your time at SP Jain helping you build the skills to achieve your goals?

My EMBA was kindly sponsored by my company (Schulke & Mayr), so I am eager to contribute back to them. Using my credentials from my Executive MBA and together with my scientific expertise, I believe that I am in an excellent position to lead high-impact medical and scientific affairs initiatives in the Asia Pacific region (or globally). This will help us achieve higher goals and live up to our motto, “To protect lives world-wide”.

From a Team Player to a Global Leader - Rajat Mathur’s (GMBA 2020) Success Story

Rajat Chandra Mathur, SP Jain’s GMBA alumnus, has always believed in the process of transition. Awarded the President’s Award for Global Excellence, he was part of the Dean’s List for all three trimesters and was also the President of the Placement Committee at SP Jain. His exceptional capabilities landed him an on-campus recruitment in PwC India.

Describing his professional journey from a team player to a leader, he shared some insights of how SP Jain's GMBA program helped to shape his career and impact his future goals. Let's learn more about his journey.

  • Tell us a bit about yourself. What are some significant moments from your life that shaped you?

Currently, I work as a Senior Associate at PwC India, as part of the Advisory line of service in the GovTech space. I am proud to be part of prestigious projects serving the nation and solving important problems. In my opinion, I have always kept calm in pressure situations breaking the problem into smaller tasks. Having faith in oneself and trusting your team has helped me in playing the role of a team player and a future leader.

  • How did you find out about SP Jain’s GMBA? Why did you decide to enrol in it?

With over 3 years of work experience, I was looking for a premier institute that will provide me with global exposure, an opportunity to learn not only from the faculty but also from peers and enable me to enter the next phase of my career. A couple of my friends had already pursued their postgraduate studies at SP Jain, and they were the ones who introduced me to the GMBA program – the curriculum and program structure aligned perfectly with my expectations.

  • You spent your time at SP Jain with people from around the world. How did this impact you?

Having a diverse cohort enables you to understand people from different parts of the globe, their thought processes, cultures, and work environments. I believe SP Jain has a unique balance with its tri-city program for its students to imbibe the business culture of that region as well as to interact with people from different sections of the world. This helps in improving communication, exercising empathy towards others and a sense of acceptance of different perceptions.

  • How does life after SP Jain look like for you? What changes have you seen in yourself since graduation?

Life after SP Jain has helped me become confident as a person, enhanced my people skills and allowed me to work effectively towards life holistically. I was nervous during the initial phase of my MBA journey, but taking one step at a time helped me live in the present and face every challenge head-on. Currently working in the GovTech space makes me feel proud and happy to contribute to building this great nation.

  • SP Jain prepares students to become global leaders. How do you think the GMBA program at SP Jain opened a gateway for you?

I have always believed in the process of transition. To become a leader, it is very important to be a team player. SP Jain provided me with an opportunity to work with wonderful people in my cohort and being around such talented minds helped me shape my personality. The faculties who addressed us ensured we emerge as responsible individuals and not as mere students graduating with an MBA degree. The Global Learning activities, Industry Interface Projects, Student Board Room assignments and the various committees formed provide a platform for the students to work together and emerge as leaders. This allowed my cohort and me to expand our horizons and emerge as global leaders of the future.

What advice would you want to give students who want to take up a similar career path as yours? How can they make the best of their SP Jain journey so they are equipped for this career?

There are no shortcuts to success. Students should strive for excellence, participate in all activities, should have the ability to listen, enhance their skills and empathise with each other. Being positive is the most important factor in one’s overall development. If the student can keep a positive mind-set and come up with solutions, they will grow as individuals and succeed in their plans.

Decentralising the Electricity Ecosystem Using Energy-Efficient Blockchain

My entrepreneurial journey started around 8 years ago when I came to Singapore along with the other co-founders of our company to start Comm-IT Consultancy Services – an IT consulting firm. It was around the same time that I got accepted into the SP Jain Executive MBA program, and I could immediately see a difference in how I handled business. I used to apply the learnings from my class directly to the company operations, and we were soon able to expand our start-up to the other parts of ASEAN. One of the most important learnings from my MBA journey was that what matters is not what you think, but what your customers think. Design thinking may seem like a recent buzzword to many – but what people often do not know is that all successful businesses have been applying this concept forever.

Do it for the Experience!

Many (prospective) students may have this certain bit of apprehension before joining this course, as to should I take up the offer, is it worth the price, will it actually be able to cover up the entire MBA portion in a year. I was no stranger to these and I took the plunge. Let me tell you why I will not regret it for the rest of my life. Believe me when I tell you that this course has a lot to offer. What eventually matters is how YOU make the most of it. The whole idea of a master’s program is to make you self-sufficient and self-reliant. This means – DO NOT EXPECT SPOON FEEDING (this is the difference between your graduate school and a B-school). In terms of the study material, it is up to the mark and you will feel burdened. Burdened by the SBR’s (these three letters will haunt your life), CRP/ALPs (the next 3 to haunt), submissions, deliverables, etc.
